I'm Mikel Casal and I live in a coastal city were it always rains, even when it doesn’t.
My granddad was a diver, old school, with diving suit and rocking a big mustache.
All my uncles, cousins and friends of my uncles and cousins have been sailors or fishermen.
My father was captain of a fishing boat, so, I spend my time staring at the sea, just in case my father’s boat appeared in the horizon.
I spend so many hours near the sea that my bike was rusted by the saltpeter, but I didn’t get rid of it, actually I still have it. ¡Throwing things that we like and are still useful is a stupid thing!
When my father, my uncles and my cousins came back home from there trips, they brought tons of memories from faraway places: Canada, South Africa, Norway, Brasil, Eire and even Hong Kong. Some of those memories that came out from bags full of saltpeter and diesel were magazines and books beautiful illustrated. I went wide eyed every time I opened them and since then I knew, without even know in it, that what I wanted to be when I grew up was one of those draughtsman. Later, I got to know they were call illustrators.
Know, that I’m also a father, I often go with my son to stare at the sea. We don’t have a boat, but we do have a pair of saltpeter rusted bikes. We play with the waves and by the time we get home, my wife says we smell to saltpeter and a bit to diesel…
I’ve got a couple of awards:
SNDE (Society for News Design) Silver medal 2011, illustration section.
Bologna Ragazzi Award in the No Fiction section, in the Children and Youth book fair of Bolonia, with the book “Así es la dictadura” from the collection “Libros para mañana”, Media Vaca publisher.
Euskadi Award of illustration 2016.
